Web 2.0

Impressions about Web 2.0:

There is no doubt there have been changes in public libraries.

Divine institutions of knowledge.......yes......but many use for other reasons like
  1. a place to drop off the kids and go shopping,
  2. a community center
  3. a cheap motel to have sex in
  4. a place where users with library cards are slim and My Space viewers are rampant
  5. a place to ogle men or women
  6. a place to get print free passes to Crossroads or Club Love

I concur that there should be a collaborative effort between users and staff.

It is hard though because sometimes there is little collaboration between the higher ups and staff........

People have various information needs. Having a presence in the virtual world helps meet the needs of a larger group of people.

Some of the 2.0 agenda is applicable is some locations better than others. There is no one size fits all. Libraries need to embrace the pieces that best meet their users needs.

Mashup

I really enjoyed Flickr Color Fields. As a person who really enjoys bold color is was great to challenge this program to see if they could find pictures in all possible colors.

I liked the options especially, the doors and windows option, crayon box and catchy colors.

I will deifinitely use this again.

librarystuff.net

I discovered an interesting blog site called librarystuff.net.

It highlights current happenings in the information world.

For example, Mrs. Bush and her daughter are going to get together and write a kid's book about a boy who likes to do anything but read.

By the Way I like to play

I had fun with play week. I enjoyed creating my avatar. Meez had a lot of fun options, but I had to log on several times for it to work.

LIBRARY CHICK ROCKS!

The End

Overall, I think that this program opened my eyes to a variety of newly emerged technology.

There are some programs I enjoyed more than others. In particular:

  • Library Thing
  • Rollyo
  • creating an avatar
  • Flicker

Then there were some other things I did not like (no opinions here).....De.licio.us and Technorati

Oh, I forgot.... I liked SandBox Wiki

Project Gutenburg.....is a great source to locate classic or hard to find sources in audio....might be helpful for highschool students

I would like to see a change within the 23 things so that all the links in the program work.

Delicious left a sour taste in my mouth. ( 2 links didn't work)

Overall my experiences were good, so if offered I would participate again.

Going Ape for Audio

I am a huge fan of audiobooks.

Tapes and CD's.......

I have not downloaded a book from the computer yet!

I am going to get an MP3 player soon.........

Next semester I am doing an independent study on audiobooks...looking at technological advances amongst other things.

Project Gutenburg...is a wealth of knowledge.....great resource for classic literature some of was hard to find

Overdrive....has a lot of diverse books....popular...John Grisham...James Patterson

Audio is awesome.

Rollyo Rock on

I really enjoyed Rollyo. Think of the endless possibilities of creating databases with the topics of interest you love the best.

Great idea.

Swedish chef making chocolate mousse. Yummy

Yelp

Yelp! Yowzers ;<)

It is very nice to know that I can go to a site that reviews and ranks stores, restaurants etc....from a non-experts point of view. When something was given a not so hot review their justification was there. Sometimes I feel critics can be too biased.

In the state of Maryland only major cities like Baltimore and Annapolis were included.

Another site I looked at was Judy's Book. Although I think this site could have great potential, it misses the mark. Some cities in Maryland had no deals......there has to be at least one deal.......of the cities that did have deals, most of them were found in Valuepack which people receive in the mail.

I was hoping to find some sales and deals that I could not find elsewhere.

Zoho Writer

So, will Zoho Writer give me ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ's or be a useful piece of technology?   It remains to be scene.

Playing in the sand

Wiki Cool

Can I just say...I love wiki's!!!!!!! I enjoyed viewing the Booklover's wiki........
It is nice that wiki's can be used for a variety of purposes, for communities ...subject based.......It has the flexibility to meet more needs.

A lot of people know about Wikipedia. However, alot of users don't know that the information is not necessarily posted by experts and can be edited like what happened with Chris Benoit the pro-wrestler.........

Users need to be informed that this is a source that shares information.....but it is not always 100% true.

Take the information based on what it is and make a personal judgement about the content and its source.

technotrashy

What is up with this site??? Hello...........is it just me but why are URL's for naked Katherine everywhere?????.............

With that being said......I understood why Harry Potter was on the Top searches......haven't we had enough of Paris Hilton already...........

It was interesting to see a politician Mike Huckabee.....branching out to the virtual world....

Who or what is Malle??? why is it on the list? Dunno

Later

Del.icio.us

Our training module for Del.icio.us left a sour taste in my mouth. The video tutorial did not work. The beginners guide was too advanced for me...a novice techie.....I did not understand most of it because it was described in words and I needed to see examples of it. While I can see how the tags can be useful....I do not think I will be using this piece of technology.

LibraryThing

I really liked using LibraryThing. I had no idea such an idea existed. It is interesting to see other readers who have selected the same books as you and have the ability to communicate and view others favorites too.

Real Simple Stuff

RSS is an intersting technology componant. I like that people have the ability to get the most updated information in their areas of interest and do not have to go through the old to get to the new.

Technology Testing

I used to be terrified of technology. Now, slowly, I am finding it pretty terrific. Recently, I purchased a digital camera and photodoc. One of my favorite things about the digi-cam is its ability to edit pictures. It has been a lot of fun to crop pictures and play with its features. I installed the photodoc software and printed some of my photos and they were colorful and beautiful. My next advventure will be with getting an MP3 player and downloading audiobooks.

Happy

The 3 L's

Wow! I created a blog.......how cool is that!!!!! Talk about learning....I am so proud of myself.

Hmmmm...the most fun habit of course is play.......we adult lack so much of that..

The easiest habit.......accepting responsibility for my own learning.

The hardest......using technology to your advantage
